Resilient Energy Communities Optimisation Network

Description

This is a ENLIGHT research network focused on a series of long-term research goals aimed at advancing sustainable energy systems. One of the primary objectives is to develop innovative technologies and methodologies that enhance the integration and optimisation of renewable energy sources. This includes creating smart controllers and employing predictive analytics to improve the efficiency and management of community-integrated renewable energy systems, such as PV systems. Additionally, the collaboration is dedicated to advancing energy storage solutions. By integrating energy storage technologies into local energy systems, the network aims to increase flexibility and reliability, ensuring a stable and resilient energy grid.
Another important point of the collaboration is the promotion of energy democracy. This goal involves incorporating local stakeholder preferences in energy planning decisions, thereby fostering democratic engagement and empowering communities. To achieve this, the network will develop tools for public participation and social simulation, supporting sustainable practices and enhancing community involvement. Furthermore, the collaboration is committed to innovating and integrating smart building technologies. By fostering heat pump technologies and sophisticated Building Management Systems, the network aims to significantly enhance energy efficiency and flexibility across diverse building types, contributing to substantial reductions in energy consumption and CO2 emissions.

The collaboration also addresses the unique challenges faced by island communities, focusing on improving their energy autonomy through advanced digital solutions for fault detection, predictive maintenance, and efficient energy resource utilisation. Those solutions, along with digital twins of energy assets, will allow for proactive management, minimising downtime, and extending the lifespan of these technologies. In addition to these technical advancements, the network aims to significantly influence policy-making and public engagement in sustainable development initiatives. Leveraging comprehensive spatial and social analyses, the collaboration will inform and shape policies that promote a greener, healthier, and more equitable Europe.
